NC Birding Trail
From our vast coastline to our high mountain peaks, North Carolina is home to a diversity of habitats that support hundreds of bird species and other wildlife. The driving trail connects sites across the state providing a common thread to tie together bird watching, wildlife viewing, and nature-based tourism for all to enjoy.
The CVB is a certified Birder-Friendly business, with many sites on the North Carolina Birding Trail. NC Birding Trail sites in Chatham County are located at Jordan Lake State Recreation Area, White Pines Nature Preserve, and Jordan Lake Education State Forest.
Jordan Lake State Recreation Area: Entrance fees are charged per vehicle on weekends in Apr, May, and Sep, and daily from Memorial Day to Labor Day. The park is free to access for day use during the rest of the year.
Fees are also charged for camping, certain event permits, and facility reservations.

White Pines Nature Preserve: Triangle Land Conservancy Nature Preserves are located around the Triangle and open for you to explore for free, year-round, from dawn to dusk. Guided tours are available occasionally, but otherwise, tours are self-guided.
Jordan Lake Education State Forest: JLESF is open mid-March to mid-November, Tuesday-Friday 9am-5pm, as well as Saturday and Sunday, 11am-8pm during daylight savings time and 11am-5pm during eastern standard time. They do not charge any fees for use of programs – admission and parking are free. Reservations are required for groups.
