DESCRIPTION
The American Tobacco Trail is a 22.6-mile regional Rails-to-Trails project built along an abandoned railroad bed originally constructed for the American Tobacco Company, running through the Research Triangle region. It includes roughly 4.6 miles of trail in northeast Chatham County. Because the route follows an old railroad bed, the terrain is flat and smooth, passing through woodland with occasional views of houses, farm fields, ponds, and creeks. The American Tobacco Trail is the site of the annual Tobacco Road Marathon and Half-Marathon, a Boston Marathon qualifying race.
Free to the public, open from sunrise to sunset. Contact us to coordinate your visit or sporting event.
The trail is free to use, featuring mostly shaded stretches with benches located at various points along the trail.
Paved portions of the trail are wheelchair accessible.
The AAT is pet-friendly. Pets must be kept on an attended leash no longer than 6 feet. Please pick up after your pets.
